The Technical Designer is responsible for managing the technical development of garments from the initial prototype through to production approval. This role focuses on ensuring garments meet fit, construction, and quality standards by conducting fit sessions, developing accurate technical specifications, and communicating detailed feedback to factories. The position plays a key role in cross-functional collaboration with Product Development, Design, and Sourcing teams to ensure timely, margin-compliant, and high-quality product execution.
Job requirements
1–3 years of experience in technical design, product development, or garment engineering within the apparel industry
Strong understanding of garment construction, pattern corrections, fabric behavior, and grading
Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Suite, G-Drive,
Experience with Slack, Asana welcome
Ability to analyze fit issues and articulate corrective actions clearly and concisely to global factory partners
Familiarity with virtual collaboration tools and remote fit review practices
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple styles simultaneously
Degree in Technical Design, Fashion Design, or a related field
Accountabilities
Fit & Construction Excellence
Lead virtual or in-person fit sessions to evaluate sample fit, construction, and measurements.
Translate fit findings into clear pattern or construction adjustments; issue corrective actions to factories.
Review, track, and approve Proto, SMS, PPS, and TOP samples to confirm they meet Trafilea’s quality and fit expectations.
Ensure specifications and garment standards remain consistent across categories and align with the brand fit strategy.
Technical Specification Management
Build and keep current all tech-pack components (graded specs, BOMs, construction details, measurement standards).
Factory Communication & Issue Resolution
Send clear, timely fit and construction comments after each development stage.
Collaborate with factory technicians—via calls, video, or annotated comments—to resolve issues and keep timelines intact.
Track open questions and follow up until resolutions are confirmed.
Sample Management
Log style status, due dates, and priorities in Asana; update tasks as samples progress through each stage.
Proactively flag risks or delays to the PD team and Sourcing so corrective actions can be taken.
Support process improvements that shorten sample turnaround time and boost factory engagement.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Product Development, Design, and Sourcing to align on design intent, margin goals, and technical feasibility.
Share fit learnings and improvement ideas during regular PD/Tech Design syncs.
Documentation & Workflow Discipline
Maintain all technical documentation in current systems (and PLM) following agreed naming and version-control practices.
Ensure data quality so reports and KPIs accurately reflect style status.
Continuous Improvement & Knowledge Sharing
Monitor position KPIs and act on gaps.
Contribute to team-wide learning by sharing best practices or leading mini–training sessions as needed
